Apartments can definitely take on a whole new look by effective use of lighting options. Because built-in light fixtures such as overhead lighting generally cannot be altered in an apartment, look for ways to add ambient lighting to a room to add visual interest and fun. Floor lamps can also be effective when placed beside a desk, or even on one side of the bed. Choose an interesting shade for the lamp, such as one with a tasseled or beaded fringe or a natural fiber finish to add a bit of personality to the room. Lamps that can use a multi-watt bulb are especially versatile, since you can turn the light up when you need it, or turn it down when you simply want soft lighting in the room.

Table lamps are one of the easiest ways to add your own personal touch to a room with lighting. There are styles to fit every decorating style, and they are generally inexpensive. You can also add even more variety with lamp shades. Place a small lamp on each nightstand on either side of the bed to create a traditional look. Table lamps can also work well in a bedroom on a small round table, surrounded with small framed photos. In the living room, add a table lamp to a short bookcase, place a comfortable chair nearby, and you will have a nice spot to sit and enjoy a good book.
