Mixing Colors that Normally Do not Mix
65
Certain colors simply “do not mix” and regardless of the rest of the room’s decor, it is sometimes a good choice to avoid clashing or coordination issues within that room. However, mixing colors that normally do not mix can be a fun and creative way to design a contemporary, vintage, or retro room, as long as you follow a few basic steps. These steps will help you learn what colors are actually acceptable to pair under certain conditions, and which ones should never be mixed regardless of the décor style for that room.
Opposites Attract
The old belief that black and white, or any opposite colors, do not mix is outdated and should be completely disregarded for the modern designer. A striking and bold color contrast is the perfect choice for a contemporary space, since the colors can coordinate with any other choices in the color palette to design a room that looks chic and contemporary. Mix black and white as accessory options in a modern space, using pastels or other shades to create color and depth on the walls or for flooring and adding the perfect finishing touch. You can also let the contrasts that appear in your abstract wall art or modern sculptures influence other color choices for the room.
Test First
Before you add two colors that are not normally intended to go together, do a test run and use color swatches or fabrics to test the look before you paint. You will get a feel for the end result, and sometimes this is a better way to determine if colors mix well or completely clash. You can also use a computer program to design a color pattern for the wall, and then print it and hang the sheet on the wall to get a basic idea of how it will look on the wall before you buy paint. Many paint retailers offer online sources so that you can download the color and print to test. However, be aware that the color that you print out at home may not be exactly true to the paint color. Once you have narrowed down your choice to one or two hues purchase a sample can and paint a swatch of color on the wall to be sure.
Keep it Simple
Shades like pink, bright green or blue, and purple can quickly overwhelm a room and start to look tacky, regardless of the shade that is used as an accessory, accent, or flooring option. Keep it simple by adding shades that do not normally mix well with others only in small quantities, or mix them with shades that dull or mute the vibrancy for maximum effect. A little girl’s room may sound perfect in shades of pink, purple, and white, but let accessories be the major source of color.
Metals and Neutrals
Neutrals are probably always going to be the most popular choice for the walls, ceiling, and even the flooring throughout the home. In a contemporary space, metals and cool shades are ideal, so instead of adding a deep gray to the wall, consider great metal accessories and accent piece to complement neutrals walls in a contemporary and stylish way.
