Practical and Creative Ways to Add Stylish Storage Space to a Utility Room

Utility rooms are handy, but often have the limitation of being one of the smaller rooms in your home. By finding ways to creatively add storage space, you can increase the usefulness of your utility room, while adding some stylish touches.

Correcting Functionality Issues – Laundry & Ironing

Laundry is a popular activity in the utility room, so you need to take special considerations to make sure you've maximized your storage space to accommodate this chore. There are several things you can do to add extra laundry storage space. Laundry hampers can take up a lot of floor space in a laundry room, but are essential to the entire process. To save space, install a flat table or wall-mounted countertop, with space underneath to stow the laundry hampers. If you purchase the type of hampers that have wheels or casters, this becomes an even handier solution. Storing them under a countertop not only keeps the laundry hampers out of site, but gives you a great work area to do tasks such as folding clothes. If your wall-mounted countertop doesn't include a drawer unit, you could roll a plastic bin storage unit under the countertop alongside the hampers. Ironing is another laundry related task that is often performed in the utility room. Instead of a free-standing ironing board that has to be folded up and stored, consider one of the fold-down wall mounted boards that are self-enclosed in a cabinet. This provides convenient storage between laundry days, while keeping the ironing board always handy. You also won't be tempted to leave the ironing board standing in the middle of the room, which only adds to clutter and disorganization.

Reduce Clutter

A shelf or wall cabinet installed over the washer and dryer is a great idea, because it maximizes the unused space over these large appliances. This also provides handy storage for laundry supplies. Cabinets with doors can be especially nice, because they can be closed to hide the contents, which help to reduce visual clutter. You can also create extra storage between the washer and dryer by adding a small roll-out cabinet that is designed for this type of space.

 Maximize Storage

Since laundry isn't usually the only activity going on in a utility room, you want to maximize your other storage options as well. If your utility room doubles as a "mud room", you might need a place to sit down to remove boots and dirty shoes. By using storage bench instead of a chair, not only will you have a handy place to sit, but you'll add hidden storage space as well, perhaps for items such as umbrellas or pet food storage. You can also place a boot mat nearby, and add a few wall hooks or a peg rack in the same area to have a place to hang jackets or your pet's leash.

The goal in a utility room is to maximize your space, while keeping the items you need handy and organized. By choosing storage options that compliment your decor, you will be adding some style and visual interest to your utility room as well.

Finally, accent your newly “expanded” laundry room with color and wall accents: Choose from tropical wall decorations, wall art musical inspired posters, bold ceramic wall art, wood art, metal art and more!
